What Is Negative SEO and What Can You Do To Combat It?

What is SEO? Okay, so that’s quite an ambiguous question, but many businesses still treat Search Engine Optimization like it’s some kind of mythical Shangri-La, so it’s well worth touching on.

In its simplest form SEO is a series of activities undertaken to increase a site’s search engine visibility and performance, but it’s also so much more than that. Perhaps that’s why there are still a lot of small businesses out there who are unsure of where to start when it comes to SEO.

However, just because you’re not doing something, that doesn’t make you immune to it. Sometimes site owners will use a type of SEO designed not to improve their own search engine rankings but to harm those of a competing websites. Negative SEO can have serious ramifications on sites that aren’t prepared for it or those who are unable to identify and rectify it should it happen.

What is Negative SEO?

To sum it up in one sentence, Negative SEO is any malicious activity undertaken in an effort to lower a website’s search engine rankings. Sites have been known to use this technique on their competition in order to rank higher for certain keywords.

Although there’s been a lot of talk about negative SEO and its subsequent effects lately, it’s worth noting that negative SEO is not actually a new process. People have been employing suspect tactics across the web for as long as there’s been a web to use them on.

That being said, it’s not as rampant a risk as many expect, and it can be an incredibly costly (in both time and money) process to undertake. In many aspects, when people believe they have been “hit by negative SEO” it’s highly likely that they are just suffering from something they have failed to notice or change on their own site.  

Google’s algorithms are constantly changing; which means that more often than not what people suspect to be the effects of “negative SEO” are actually caused by old links which have lost their value or old, stale content on their site holding them back against their competitors.

It’s still important to remember that some people do still carry out negative SEO though. Knowing what you should be looking out for will allow you to identify the signs early and deal with the problem accordingly.

What to look out for

Google’s algorithms analyse and inspect every website they come across, looking at what’s happening both on-site and off, and which sites are linking back and forth. Those sites with suspicious link profiles are at risk of seeing their search engine rankings drop.

One common negative SEO tactic is to purchase a large quantity of unnatural, spammy backlinks for a site. This kind of link behaviour is highly frowned upon by search engines, as it gives the impression that you’re trying to manipulate your own site’s PageRank.

Another tactic is the scraping of content. Copying and pasting one site’s content onto a number of other sites across the web can cause serious duplicate content issues. Search engines will flag that your content is not unique, and unless the original source of the content is abundantly clear, it will have a damaging effect on your site.

What can you do about it?

Whilst it may seem like there is little you can do to properly protect your site from negative SEO, you’re not completely defenceless.

For example, if a competitor really wants to carry out negative SEO against your site then it takes a lot of dedication and investment on their part for it to actually have a serious effect. If you stay vigilant you can recognise the warning signs of it happening and work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

To begin with, make sure you regularly check Google Analytics for any anomalies. Create custom alerts for when you have any sharp increases or decreases in traffic, and for when you see any extreme increases in your sites bounce rate.

You should also regularly perform an in-depth audit of your inbound links. You should regularly check your link profile to ensure that that they’re relevant to your site and that they use suitable anchor text.

Use backlink analysis tools like Majestic SEO to identify any anomalies in your link profile. Whilst most of the backlinks you’ll receive will probably be perfectly natural, if you do notice any strange activity you can work to remove or disavow the links, through the Google Disavow Tool.

Also, check your anchor text ratio.  If you spot a large number of links with exact match anchor text, then it’s well worth looking into, as search engines tend to find this kind of behaviour suspicious. Try to ensure that no more than 10-20% of your anchor text is made up of exact-match keywords and that at least 50% is branded.

People spend a lot of time creating high-quality content, so it can be disheartening to find your content copied across the web. You can use tools like Copyscape to check if your content has been plagiarised by other websites.

While you can’t directly protect yourself from the effects of Negative SEO, it’s well worth knowing what to look out for. With basic knowledge of the above you’ll be able to monitor your site and work quickly to remedy the situation should any issues arise.

The first step is one of the most difficult. The internet is saturated with “already-in-use” names, and it can take hours to find a domain that fits your business that isn’t taken. Popular domain search websites include GoDaddyNameNameCheapHover and Gandi. Start brainstorming a list of website names you find acceptable, and then search them in one of these domain sites. 2. Choose the .com, .org or .ie?

Everybody wants ‘.com’, as it is what people assume your website will have. Getting a ‘.com’ is the most challenging, with high competition for normal-sounding domains (but not a problem if you are going for “” – but please don’t make it so long). Essentially, if you SEO your website to the max then using ‘.biz’ shouldn’t be a problem. But, psychology is important to bear in mind here. As creatures of habit, a person may assume that “” caters specifically to Germany. If you are providing a localized service in Germany, this is the best way to go. A ‘.com’ for a local delivery company may put some people off. Equally, if you have an international scope, choosing ‘.es’ may cause people to think you only serve Spain.

With about 252 million domain names currently registered across the Internet, the short, recognizable dot-com Web addresses, or URLs, have long been taken.

The New York cousins who started a digital sing-along storybook business have settled on the name Mibblio.

The Australian founder of a startup connecting big companies to big-data scientists has dubbed his service Kaggle.

The former toy executive behind a two-year-old mobile screen-sharing platform is going with the name Shodogg.

And the Missourian who founded a website giving customers access to local merchants and service providers? He thinks it should be called Zaarly.

Quirky names for startups first surfaced about 20 years ago in Silicon Valley, with the birth of search engines such as YahooYHOO +0.73% —which stands for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle,” and GoogleGOOG -0.25% a misspelling of googol,” the almost unfathomably high number represented by a 1 followed by 100 zeroes.

By the early 2000s, the trend had spread to startups outside the Valley, including the Vancouver-based photo-sharing site Flickr and New York-based blogging platform Tumblr, to name just two.

The current crop of startups boasts even wackier spellings. The reason, they say, is that practically every new business—be it a popsicle maker or a furniture retailer—needs its own website. With about 252 million domain names currently registered across the Internet, the short, recognizable dot-com Web addresses, or URLs, have long been taken.

The only practical solution, some entrepreneurs say, is to invent words, like Mibblio, Kaggle, Shodogg and Zaarly, to avoid paying as much as $2 million for a concise, no-nonsense dot-com URL.

The rights to, for example, sold for about $2.5 million last year.

How I End Every Day With Zero Emails

Email has taken over our business day as well as nights and weekends. At the beginning of this year, I started keeping track of how much time I spend on email and the results were shocking. The short answer is too much, way too much. Right then, I made a promise to myself that I would (or try to) end everyday with 0 emails in my in-box. At first I thought it was impossible, as I routinely get more than 300 messages a day, but as time went on I not only learned to manage email more efficiently, I took charge on my day. If you are looking to free yourself from the in-box overload, follow along:

Step 1: Every email is not Important

“All my emails are important,” or so I thought. But what I’ve realized now is that every email is not important. Every client is important. Many of my emails are just disruptive. I finally made a choice not to let other people set the agenda for my day. Every email usually pulls me in a different direction, but it’s my job to prioritize and value my time. So before you get pulled into the email overload, list the things you want to accomplish and stay focused on tasks at hand. Don’t let regular in-coming email interrupt your work flow or concentration. Only pause for the truly important.

Step 2: Close Your Mail Program

While it can be easy to get drawn into working from your in-box (it’s almost addictive), I realized it is counterproductive. Now I don’t work from my in-box. I usually turn my mail program off while I am writing or working on a report or coming up with promotional ideas for my clients. Then every few hours I take a look at my in-box, delete the many FYI emails, and file the ones that are important to save.

Step 3: Move Action Items Out of Mail Program

Once my in-box is cleaned up, I assess the emails that need some reply or action. If I can reply quickly, I do and delete the email. If it needs action, I decide what needs to happen and transfer that action item to your calendar. As an example I may add to my calendar: “send proposal to Jeff for the web publicity campaign for his book.” This way I can use my email time to identify the things that are most important and prioritize them in my calendar. If I don’t get something done, I just move it to the next day. But I know I won’t forget to do something important or lose an important email at the bottom of my email pile.

Step 4: Stop Reading Emails Twice

Before I started using my calendar system, I would leave my emails in my in-box until I took care of them. So everyday there would be dozens of emails that I had to read again and remind myself what action I needed to take. Since they were usually not urgent, I would just leave them there. The next day same thing would happen. Thankfully I finally realized that I was wasting a lot  of time and energy using my in-box as a to-do list. Now I hardly ever read an email twice.

Step 5: Choose Quality over Quantity

Time management experts tell us there’s a difference between being busy and being productive, and they are right. You can make yourself busy all day long just answering irrelevant emails, but at the end of the day you will feel defeated if you don’t make any progress on your important priorities.

Step 6: Take Break from Email

We all need a break from the constant flow of email. Some days it can be hard to even think. It took me a long time to realize that I was more productive, more creative and more enthusiastic about my work when I took regular unplugged breaks (email and social media). So if possible give yourself some hours or days when you don’t check email at all. Just so you can give yourself some space for creative ideas and big-picture thinking.
